Blackpool Cup
Report
We are fast
running out of superlatives for the efforts of the Senior Squad this season.
Another weekend,
another match and another great performance!
Drawn in a match
that included (once again) Trafford, The team took them so very close and
finished runners up by a mere 5 points! This has qualified the team to contest
the Main Northern League Cup Final in September at SportCity Manchester
–
a fantastic result.
As has been the
trend all season, no superstars, just honest endeavour and team spirit pulled
them through, demolishing everything in their way. Even though Trafford had
several Internationals in their team, they were hard pressed to hold off the BWFAC
team.
A full programme
of events, including a track 10K for the men meant that all the team had to
contribute to boost the final score, and this is exactly what they did. Hardly
any event unfilled and some good ‘Stand-in’ performances, which helped,
increase the overall tally.
Good support again from some of our very talented U/17’s in both men’s and women’s team whilst at the ‘slightly’ older end of the scale, Dave Myerscough once again proved what a vital asset he is to the Club.
Some new PB’s were
set on the day, not least by the industrious Nia Rutter and Sarah Goff but also
some powerful runs from the likes of Jono Prowse, Brent Starkie and the
hard-working Phil Leybourne who tackled the 3K ‘Chase for the first time ever.
In the women’s match, Carolyn Robbins supported well in the 400m hurdles and the 1500m and it was fantastic to see Carrie MacRae back in action and showing the four or five years away can’t hide real talent as she took the top spot in the javelin in her first match back! Also returning to solo competition for the first time in nearly three years, Leigh Newton finished in a strong second spot in the 400m.
Elsewhere a double
sprint success as Laura Davies and Katy Wyper both won their 100m & 200m
respectively before joining Leigh and Nia to run out easy winners in the 4x100
relay.
In the field, as
well as Nia and Carrie, Robyn Starkey again helped out her ‘senior’ team-mates
by tackling the hammer with her U/17 colleagues Natasha Butler and Katy
supporting well in both high & long jump.
A similar story
for the men, where the middle distance guys really excelled, as well as Phil in
the chase, outstanding runs from Luke Minns (800), Jono Prowse (1500), Antony
Ford (5K) and Stuart Robinson (10K) boosted the teams points before the sprints
group of Alex Bale, Simon Wells, Ted Romney and Brent Starkie also demonstrated
fine form. In the field, it is almost expected now that Jon Rutter will cover
almost any event, whilst support from Dave Myerscough and Laurence Harwood
tends to go a little unnoticed but they are really vital contributors to the
team totals.
The day was
probably best summed up in the final track event of the afternoon when Ted,
Luke, Brent an Alex teamed up to set a new club record in the 4x400m relay and
round off a wonderful afternoon with an outstanding win some seven seconds
ahead of the next team and a clear 13 seconds in front of Trafford.
The team are now
confident that they can go into the ‘Main’ Cup Final and give any team a real
good run for their money.
