Blackpool Report
They
think it’s all over – It is now!
Well, not
quite, but the League season came to a terrific and well deserved climax at
home as the senior team ran out worthy winners for the fourth match in a row. No
one could begrudge the team a magnificent victory celebration on their own
patch after such a wonderful series of matches.
Once again it was the team spirit that carried the day,
volunteers across the spectrum ensured that every point was contested and every
position possible was filled. The team managers are both very grateful for the
willingness of the team to support each other and the Club in such a great way.
To select
individuals would be wrong, but there were some excellent performance both on
the track and in the field.
For the
men, to have two 400m runners both go under 50 secs and both be well clear of
any challengers is truly remarkable. Brent
Starkie and Ted Romney have enjoyed a fine
season and Sunday was just a tremendous performance – How come they couldn’t
force their way into the 4x400 relay squad then? Well, those endurance guys
laid down a real challenge as they very nearly took the final victory of the
season narrowly forced into second spot in the last event of the day. How
typical it was that Ted, Brent and the rest of the team all stayed to cheer those
‘Trotters’ home – Well Done all the guys.
For the
ladies, a similar story, the 4x100 team again stormed to victory. Unbeaten this
season they really look the part and their changeovers become slicker with
every meeting. Not to be outshone by the boys, the ladies team in the 4x400
also excelled and were desperately unlucky to finish a close third despite a
fine all-round team effort. I think all the ladies in the squad competed in at
least two events and some contested even more before tackling the final track
event.
In the
field, it was (almost) a rest day for our intrepid couple of Jon & Nia Rutter. Both were allowed to
concentrate on their main event of Triple Jump for once, and both were rewarded
with excellent performances as the team scored maximum points for both the men
and the women – thanks to great support from U/17’s Megan Healey and James Davies. A good time to
mention the incredible support too from all our U/17’s. Too many to mention
individually, but you know who you are and throughout the season you have
responded magnificently! The seniors could not have done it with your support.
Back to
the seniors, and it was great to see the return of the Myerscoughs, both Grant and Dave scoring well in the
throws as did Bob and Shane, and for the ladies fantastic performances from Katy Wyper, Katie Holder and Dawn Gasgarth was
vital in taking the team into a well deserved lead.
Elsewhere,
the usual fine performances from the team Captains, Jono Prowse and Sarah Goff
(pictured) inspired the teams to
victory. The work that these two have done this year is not to be understated,
and they even managed to round off a great day with a great barbecue – our very
own Delia and Gordon!
As usual,
the team would not want to miss out on thanking the very valuable support of
our officials. This week, Ian, Stan, Kevin and Mark were joined by Dave Wood who did a wonderful job out in the field, especially after
we ‘lost’ Margaret part way through the day due to a recurrence of her chest
infection – on behalf of all the team, the Managers and the Club, a very big
thank you and get well soon to Margaret!
So that’s
it for the League, wrapped up and the trophy in the bag. BUT, and it’s a big
BUT…. The Fat Lady can’t sing yet as they say…. August 31st at Cudworth is the
big one. Just one more push, one more big effort and the real victory will be
ours (Yours!)!
There is
no doubt we have the quality, we just need the continued support and team
spirit to see us through the last match and into the top division. We will need
everyone to be fit and available and no one can possibly stop the BWFAC
steamroller!
Well done
so far to everybody, a big, big thank you to everyone who has competed and
assisted so far, now, all we have to do is round off the season in style
Lets Go
For It!
