BWFAC Northern League 1st Round Match

Wigan 3rd May 2008

A great all-round team performance saw the BWFAC team storm to victory in the opening match of the new T&F league season.

Facing strong opposition from the home club, Wigan, plus Spenborough, East Cheshire, Holmfirth and St Helens, the team eventually finished with a lead of over 40 points on the day.

For the men, there were individual ‘A’ string wins for Jono Prowse (5K) Damian Clayson (High Jump) and Matt Wright (Pole Vault). However, leading the way was Jon Rutter who won both the Long Jump and Triple Jump in his first full season since returning to the area.

For the ladies, It was Jon’s wife Nia who captured the headlines with a superb afternoon’s work where she picked up an ‘A’ string win in the Triple Jump, a 2nd place ‘A’ string for Shot Putt and 3 fine 2nd place ‘B’ string results for 200, Long Jump & Javelin before joining the 4x100 winning relay team too. Other ‘A’ String winners for the ladies team were Laura Davies (100m) and Gemma Unsworth (1500m).

Special mention should be made of the valuable support from the U/17’s on the day, Katy Wyper took 2 ‘B’ string wins at 100m and Triple Jump whilst Declan O’Hara (Pole Vault) and Darrell Constantine (Triple Jump) also both recorded ‘B’ string wins too. Despite the fact they were all to appear in the Young Athletes match next day, these three, along with Luke Wood and Louis Schofield, added very valuable points to the overall tally.

Elsewhere, fine ‘B’ string wins for Phil Leybourne (5K), Stuart Robinson (1500m) and Bob Wyper (Discus) plus, for the ladies Nicola Rowley (1500m and 3k) all helped to ensure the overall victory, but, in truth it was a fine team effort that really ensured the win with all athletes contributing and most contesting at least two events each. All in all it was really good reflection of the team spirit that BWFAC enjoy.

The team now move on to Cleckheaton in June for the 2nd match with high hopes of continuing this success and possibly gaining promotion at the end of the season.
