BWFAC Northern League 1st Round Match

A new
season, new teams in the league but a similar strong start by the BWFAC
contingent.
Although pipped at the final count by West Cheshire, the
team put up a very spirited performance despite the loss of some key athletes
due to injury, work and other athletic commitments such as BUCS - British
Universities and Colleges Sports (ex-BUSA) - championships and Young Athletes
League the following day.
At the
end of the match, BWFAC finished in second spot, a mere 37 points behind
the winners. This despite the fact that we had 10 ‘A’ string winner to their 9!
There is no doubt that BWFAC have the talent, but we are hampered a
little by lack of numbers. If we are to improve and gain promotion, we must
work on filling all the gaps.
Ladies first, and it was a double winning start for the Club’s top female sprinter in Laura Davies. Laura took top spot in both the 100 and 200m before helping the team to 2nd in the 4x100relay.
Another
‘A’ string winner was Nia Rutter, Nia is increasing her triple jump performance at each meeting
and recorded a fine 11.84m some 2m in front of her nearest challenger, whilst Liz Hodgson is consolidating her place
as an excellent 400m hurdler, Liz stormed home to win the first event of the day in 74.2 and
set the team up for good days work. Only one ‘B’ string winner for the ladies,
and it was great to see Andrea Smith taking to the track, Andrea took the ‘B’ event in the 3000m with 11.29.2.
But of
course, the winners were only part of the story; it was a very strong all-round
performance from the ladies, where most of them competed in 2 or 3 events to
secure those vital extra points. Without wishing to miss some great
performances, probably special mentions of Laura
Deegan, Katie
Holder and Sarah
Goff all of whom contested 3 events and
relays, plus our only U/17’s who took part on the day, Katy Wyper and Katie Wood.
For the
men, there were 6 ’A’ string winners and 3 ‘B’ wins as well. Top performance
here was probably the excellent double win of Grant
Myerscough, which included a fine
new PB of 40.11m in the discus as well as finishing over 2m clear in the shot
with 14.58m Fantastic throwing from Grant. Also Matt Wright was well over a metre clear in the Pole Vault with a
clearance of 4.20 and how good to see Jono
Prowse back in form after a winter of illness
and injury, Jono stormed the last lap of the 1500m to win in 4.13.4.
Elsewhere it was the sprinters that took the eye, Brent Starkie staking
his claim to the 400m with a great 50sec run whilst Alex Bale won both the ‘B’
string short sprints. These two together with James
Fahey and Dominic
Garrett quite rightly
dominated the 4x400m relay to round the day off as we started with a win for BWFAC.
Other
notable performances for the men came from Declan
O’Hara who took the ‘B’ string in the Triple
Jump, some fine work from Jon Rutter and the middle-distance team of Stuart Robinson, Luke Berry and Chris Lloyd, whilst pride of place
goes to Gareth Jones who ‘volunteered’ to compete in the 3K steeplechase. It
was this sort of team effort that typified the excellent work from all those
that took part for both the men and the ladies.
Well Done
the BW&F AC team!
On now to
Litherland in June, where hopefully we will be able to welcome some of our
returning athletes and regain our rightful place at the top of the league
