BWFAC Northern Cup 1st Round Match

Well, the gods were definitely against BWFAC at this match!
As if it wasn’t enough that the draw pitted
us against four of the toughest teams in the North, the team was then presented
with the team number 13 – some omens there then?
The draw for the opponents in both matches
conspired to put BWFAC in with City
of
So it proved as the team battled gallantly
but finally finished in 4th, just behind Holmfirth in the final qualifying
spot.
Mixed fortunes for both Men and Ladies with
a fair degree of success but also a couple of gaps which only added to the
problems.
For the ladies, both Gemma Unsworth in the 3000m and Nia Rutter in the Triple Jump took the top
prize, Nia had her usual busy day, taking 2nd in the Long Jump and
3rd in the shot before assisting the ladies 4x100m team into 2nd place.
Elsewhere, Liz Hodgson showed what good form she is currently enjoying by
finishing 2nd in both the 400m flat and the 400m hurdles. The sprint ladies
also took second spot in both the 100m and 200m with a season’s best from
Laura
Davies in the 100m and a great run from
U17 Katy
Wyper in the 200m. In fact the
U17’s were much in evidence with Katie Wood supporting the seniors once again and taking 2nd in the hammer as
well as contesting the discus – before she also offered to take part in
the ladies 4x400m relay if needed! Fine support from Katie once again. So too Loryn McCrudden who is having a great season in the Pole Vault, this
time taking second against some quality opposition, Loryn
also stepped out of her normal zone to compete in the javelin and the relay!
Well done all the U/17 Ladies.
Finally for the seniors, a new personal
best for Sarah
Goff in the 100mH, Sarah will be missed when she leaves for Swansea University
this autumn, and BWFAC’s
regular middle distance ladies, Laura Deegan and Carolyn Robbins who both turned in good performances at 800m and 1500m
respectively.
Once again in the men’s events it was
a very tough day for everyone, despite some fine efforts. The loss of all three
of our talented Pole Vaulters and the lack of a 10000m runner (where do they
all go after filling the track every Thursday?) made life very difficult.
The day started well enough with Laurence Harwood taking top place in the hammer and there were fine
successes for Luke Minns in a
thrilling 1500m and once again an U17 stole the show as James Davies produced some
excellent form to win the Long Jump. These turned out to be isolated successes
though against very strong opponents. Despite fine work from Nick Costello, Alex Bale and Ted Romney in the
sprints where Ted improved again
to dip below the magic 50s barrier at 400m they were still overshadowed by
their Division 1 counterparts. Able assistance from Chris Lloyd (5000m) and Jim Unsworth
(3000mSC) and good support from another up and coming U17 in Marcus Quarmby (800m) was not really good enough in the track events
this week.
In the field events the men fared a little
better, Jon
Rutter
demonstrated his ability and commitment to the cause with a great effort in the
Triple Jump AND High Jump before also tackling both long and short hurdles!
Knowing Jon, he may also have volunteered for the 10000m had it not
clashed with all his other events. Oh, and of course he also ran his usual
great 3rd leg of the relay too! With Dave Myerscough
still willing to turn out despite a niggling hip injury and yet another
promising U17 Louis Schofield
competing in the javelin – where he beat the mighty Sale athlete –
and the relay, the team spirit and collective effort of both men and ladies
ultimately went unrewarded, a great shame.
However, the team remain unbowed and defiant.
They all realise that the greater prize is in the last two remaining league
matches. First at home on Sunday 2nd August, the seniors will be
crowned rightful Champions (Again!) when they beat
To achieve these aims, it requires a last
final effort AND the strongest team possible. The seniors would also welcome
all and any support to help them on their way. We will naturally have the usual
great officials in Stan, Margaret, Dave N, Kevin and Dave W, but we
always need more. For the home match we also require a results compiler,
announcer, recorder and others. No experience necessary, but all offers of help
welcomed!
Come along and encourage all these
athletes, not only for the current crop of regular senior athletes, but also to
ensure a high level of competition for all those up and coming athletes in the
Club.
Well done so far everyone, let’s just
have that final effort now to help us across the line.
