SCOTTISH OPEN INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
U13/U15/U17/U20 GLASGOW 14/15.02.09
A sizeable BWFAC contingent of
eleven females and one lone male made the journey northwards to Glasgow to
compete in the Scottish indoor championships, held in the Kelvin Hall over the
weekend of Saturday and Sunday 14/15th February. And what a
productive and worthwhile weekend it proved with several medals and PBs
auguring well for the Track and Field battles ahead.
U13G Tash Gardner
got Saturday underway with a bang, taking
gold in the 60m (8.39s) and 200m (27.69s). She also set a new BWFAC
record of 8.30 in her heat of the 60m. These performances have taken Tash to
the top of her age-group rankings for the two sprint distances.
U15G Sophie Riley
was
also in good form as she put last year’s injuries behind her to storm to the
bronze medal position in the 200m (26.32s). She did the same in the 60m,
recording a new club mark of 8.14 in the process. There was more gold care of
Chloe Needham, who took the U15G Pole Vault title with 2.25m as well as
claiming seventh in the Shot Putt with 7.57m
.
Katrina Kelly took part in the
U13 championships, recording 9.80 for 60m and 33.12 for 200m. Kassidy Knight
was busy in the U15G events where she recorded 8.50 for 60m, and 29.70 for
200m, as well as leaping 4.20m in the Long Jump. Claudia Fiddler (8.55s, 60m;
28.23s, 200m) and Brittany Shaw (8.69s; 29.25s) completed the U15 track
contingent.
There were medals too in the
U17 championships on Sunday 15th. Katy Wyper
took bronze in the 60m with a new BWFAC
record of 7.98 and then leapt out to 4.97m for similar in the Long Jump. Lucy
Mansfield made up for fifth place in the 60m in 8.03 by claiming silver in the
200m with a swift 25.89
.
Bethany Towers was determined not to be outdone as she lowered her club best,
and won a bronze medal, with 9.16 for the U17W 60mH. She also clocked 28.59 in
her heat of the 200m.
.
James Davies flew the flag for
the BWFAC male contingent with a magnificent performance in the U17M
Long Jump. James
claimed the gold medal with a new PB and club
best of 6.62m, after being adjudged the winner on countback from Kyle Henderson
of Central AC.
The unluckiest athlete of the
weekend was U17W Alicia Johnston who was misinformed about the status of her
300m race, which turned out to be a final rather than a semi. She did however
clock a PB of 43.59.
All in all it was a successful
raid north of the border. Well done
to all concerned.
