NFAC HISTORY |
North Fylde Athletic Club was formed in 1985
by a group of Civil Servants, at the DSS Blackpool Offices, who were keen to promote the benefits of running. At that time, most of the Civil Servants were members of other, established local clubs. A year later the club affiliated to the AAA. The next step was to enter local races and the Mid Lancs Cross Country League. Competing
in the Northern Road Relays and National Cross Country Championships soon
followed and the late 1980s and early 1990s saw NFAC finishing teams
towards the back of the field. However, Civil Servant second claim members
were joining first claim and two were to play a large role in the
subsequent success and development of NFAC into one of the top road and cross
country clubs in Lancashire. These were Tony Croft (Chairman 1988 - 1995)
and Nick Hume (Chairman from 1995 onwards). Also, non Civil Servants were
being attracted by the friendly atmosphere and growing reputation. During the mid to late 1990's NFAC
were making their presence felt and were constantly in the top 10 teams in
the Manchester to Blackpool Relay, winning medals in Lancashire Championships and improving in the Northern 6 and 12 Stage
Relays. Since 1999 the men's 12 Stage Team has reached the National 12 Stage
Finals at Sutton Park each year. Individual successes were rewarded with County
Vests at Cross Country, 10k and 20 miles. NFAC welcomes athletes of all abilities and has 6 qualified coaches. The main club night is on a Wednesday evening (19.00) when runners meet at the Sports Pavilion, Fleetwood Road, Thornton for training runs of varying distances. Newcomers are welcome and someone will always run with you to encourage you. Several training sessions are organised by the Club Coaches throughout the week.In September 2006 NFAC merged with Blackpool & Fylde AC to form Blackpool, Wyre & Fylde AC. |
