The Kirkham 10k road race was first staged in the 1970's when it was organised by Springfields AC over a largely rural out-and-back course from the Lancashire market town centre. The original course had to be abandoned when part of the town centre was redeveloped in the 1990's and a new equally rural route, based around the BNFL site in nearby Salwick, was devised. Following the demise of Springfields AC, North Fylde AC took over the race organistaion which was assumed by Blackpool Wyre & Fylde AC in 2007. Following the loss of the race HQ the 2009 event was cancelled.

The race was sponsored by BNFL for over twenty years and, when they withdrew, sponsorship was taken over by Fleetwood Car Centre. There were 164 finishers in 2008.
