Vault Manchester 09 Saturday 17th January 2009

Vault Manchester is one the
indoor season’s most prestigious competitions and attracts all the big names in
the sport. Eight BWFAC athletes made the journey to Manchester’s
SportCity (above) to compete at this year’s event.
It was an early start for the
five youngest vaulters whose competition began at 9:30 in the morning. It was
well worth the effort though as all gained new PB’s and Chloe Needham, who made
her debut in this competition last year, jumped 2.32 metres to take the silver
medal in the U15G competition. Loryn McCrudden (2.12m) and Tanya Wright
(2.02m), in only their second ever competition, came 5th and 6th
respectively in the U17W event. In the U15B, Matthew Walker easily cleared
2.42m for 5th place and in his first competition Finn Walker jumped
an excellent 2.12m.
Our two most experienced
athletes, Laurie Needham and Matthew Wright had a more convenient start time,
but found themselves in the same pool as Britain’s highest ranked vaulters,
Steve Lewis and Luke Cutts! Unfortunately, Laurie had to withdraw due to a knee
injury but Matt, in his usual determined manner, cleared 4.22m to take 4th
place in the U20M event.
And finally, Declan O’Hara
(3.72m) who has been training hard this winter narrowly missed out on a new PB
just brushing the bar on his final try at 3.82m.
This was another excellent
effort by the BWFAC vaulters. Well done.
